Following a series of high-profile incidents involving tourist safety, Goa is aiming to reassure visitors with a range of enhanced security measures.

The Indian coastal state’s Tourism Minister, Manohar Azgaonkar, has outlined his priorities regarding tourist safety, including steps to help female travellers.

A special women’s helpline has been set up and two female-only police stations are now available to help women in distress. Likewise, a taxi service exclusively for female travellers is now operational.

“We have set the agenda for tourism in Goa, with safety and security of tourist being the number one priority for the tourism department. The Goa government… is augmenting budgets for improving safety and security measures in the state keeping in mind the tourism industry and the importance of providing a safe holiday for tourists visiting Goa,” the minister said.

In addition to safety measures for female travellers, Goa is aiming to tighten up security in other areas. New security processes have been implemented at Goa’s Dabolim International Airport and at the state’s borders. Additional CCTV has also been installed in key tourist locations and extra security officers and lifeguards are now on duty across Goa.

The 600+ lifeguards have reportedly rescued “hundreds of tourists”, and beach patrols are now ongoing until midnight to guard against night swimming. CCTV will also be made mandatory for all beach shacks.

“We have never compromised on tourist safety in Goa. Every year the focus is on stepping up these measures and all agencies involved in this are doing their best to ensure that tourists have a safe holiday in Goa,” said Nilesh Cabral, chairman of the Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC).

Goa welcomed a total of 6.3 million visitors in 2016, 680,000 of whom were international tourists. However British newspaper The Guardian reported recently that 245 tourists have died in Goa in the last 12 years. These included the high-profile murders of 15-year-old Scarlett Keeling in 2008 and Danielle McLaughlin in February.

A new agreement will come into force this week that will enhance connectivity between India and the US.

On Wednesday 19 April 2017, Jet Airways will start partnering with UK-based Virgin Atlantic to provide more transfer options for passengers travelling between India and the US, via London Heathrow Airport.

Passengers of both airlines will be able to book single-ticket travel from Mumbai or Delhi to Heathrow and onwards to nine US destinations served by Virgin Atlantic: Atlanta, Boston, Newark, Washington, New York, Los Angeles, Miami, San Francisco and Seattle.

Baggage will be checked through to the final destination, and passengers of both airlines will be able to earn frequent flyer points on all sectors.

This codeshare builds on the existing agreement between Jet and Virgin Atlantic, which has been in place since 2009. This enables the UK carrier’s passengers to travel on Jet’s flights between Mumbai and Delhi and Heathrow, and onwards to five other Indian destinations. Delta Air Lines also forms part of the three-way partnership.

“Offering greater choice and connectivity to our guests has always been a hallmark of our network strategy. The new codeshares build on the success of our ongoing cooperation with Delta Air Lines and Virgin Atlantic over London Heathrow and will provide our guests with more connectivity to and within the United States,” said Gaurang Shetty, Jet’s whole-time director.

In October last year, Delta and Jet started codesharing between India and the US, via Heathrow, with the Atlanta-based airline’s passengers offered connections to 20 destinations within India and Jet’s customers offered connections to 18 US cities.

Tickets under the new codeshare are now available for sale for travel effective 19 April 2017.

Havelock Island is accessible from Port Blair via ferry and seaplane.

Taj Exotica Resort & Spa Andaman Islands will join existing Taj Exotica-branded resorts in other key beach destinations including Goa and the Maldives.

Virgin Atlantic will start charging Economy Class passengers to pre-select their seats. The airline said the charges, from GBP 50 for a round-trip, long-haul flight, would be introduced from May 1, 2014 although a note on Virgin's website suggests fees will be introduced from April 1 on flights from Gatwick to Las Vegas and charges won't apply to other US routes until June 1. Also, passengers flying between the UK and Tokyo will remain exempt from the charge, travelmole.com reported.

A spokeswoman said all passengers will still be able to reserve a seat free of charge when online check-in opens 24 hours before departure, but if they want to select a specific seat any earlier they will have to pay. She said the charge was being introduced as the airline has found it impossible to guarantee every seat chosen in advance due to last-minute changes in the type of aircraft operating a route.

"If fewer passengers choose seats in advance we would be able to re-seat most passengers in very similar seats to their original choices. So from May 1, 2014 we will be introducing a charge to choose your economy seat in advance," the spokeswoman said.

Seat selection can be made on most routes 336 days in advance to passengers prepared to pay the fee. Those who wait until check-in opens will be able to choose from the seats that are left, which might mean parents travelling with young children risk being separated on a long-haul flight.

The charge will be GBP 25 per person per flight on Virgin's long-haul services and GBP eight per person, per flight on Little Red domestic flights.

A note on Virgin's website says frequent flyers won't be able to pay for seat selection using Miles or Miles Plus money, but the airline hopes to be able to offer this facility shortly.

It will raise the income of locals and give a boost to tourism in the state," said Subhash Kumar, Chief Secretary, Uttarakhand while addressing the state committee of Nandadevi Biosphere Reserve in Dehradun yesterday.

While holidaying in the wild, tourists often look for an abode which is located amid natural surroundings but at the same time gives them a feeling of home away from home, he said, adding the facility of home stay in these villages will fulfil this requirement of visitors besides adding to the income of villagers.

Five homes in each of these villages will be developed in the first phase to create the facility of home stay for visitors which may later be expanded to more homes and more villages. The mid-June calamity in Uttarakhand dealt a blow to tourism and efforts are currently underway to attract more and more visitors to its idyllic environs.

Notwithstanding a string of glitches the state-of-the-art aircraft has faced in the recent past, the tenth Dreamliner of Air India Ltd flew into New Delhi yesterday from the Boeing headquarters in Seattle, with Ajit Singh, Minister for Civil Aviation, Government of India, onboard. The latest Boeing 787, carrying call-sign VT-ANG, landed at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport at 1350 hrs and was received by Rohit Nandan, Chairman and Managing Director, Air India, and Prabhat Kumar, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India, as per a PTI report.

Singh was in the US, leading a team of his Ministry officials, to attend the India-US Aviation Summit. He had a series of meetings with aviation officials, apart from visiting the Boeing headquarters and manufacturing facilities.

The tenth Dreamliner arrived days after one of them suffered cracks in its windowpanes when it landed at Melbourne, while another had a false alarm shown on its cockpit panel about a problem in the brake system as it landed under emergency conditions in New Delhi. Last month, a panel had fallen off the aircraft's belly in Bengaluru.

G P Rao, spokesperson, Air India, said all problems regarding the aircraft, including minor incidents, were being reported to the aircraft manufacturer. A Boeing team was working with the airline's engineering and maintenance team.

In the same vein, Wilson Chow, Communications and Marketing Manager, Boeing, said, "Boeing is aware of the in service issue and we're working with Air India on the matter."

Air India, which has been experiencing trouble with its newly-acquired Boeing 787s almost since it began inducting them late last year, wants to use the new-generation aircraft fleet as the mainstay for rapid expansion of its global network. With this aircraft, Air India now has ten Boeing 787s out of a total of 27, for which it has placed orders.

The airline, which has connected cities like Birmingham, Melbourne and Sydney, plans to have have air links with Rome, Milan and Moscow during this winter. The planes were also flying on domestic routes like Delhi-Chennai, Delhi-Bengaluru and Delhi-Kolkata.

Railways Planning Semi-high-speed Trains To Cut Journey Time Between Delhi & Mumbai

The travel time between Delhi and Mumbai could soon be cut by three hours as the Indian Railways is working to run the Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duronto trains at speeds of 160-200 kms per hour. This means the 17-hour journey between the two metros will be down to 14 hours, while the travel time between Delhi and Chandigarh will be reduced by one hour, Mahendra Singh reported in The Times of India. The maximum speed of Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duronto trains now range between 130-150 kmph. With the Railways not able to fund capital-intensive bullet trains, it is working on operating semi-high-speed trains at 160-200 kmph with marginal improvisation to the existing infrastructure.

Arunendra Kumar, Chairman, Railway Board, said, “As huge money is required to achieve speeds of more than 300 kmph, we have decided to run trains at 160-200 kmph as the cost will be much lower. This will help Railways cut down travel time for premier trains between major stations."

The Planning Commission, in a joint meeting of the officials of the related ministries of Home Affairs, External Affairs, Tourism, etc., has recommended the extension of Visa on Arrival (VoA) facilities to citizens of 40 more countries. The Commission also recommended VoA for senior citizens and pensioners from all countries, as well as setting up online visa processing system to enhance smoother facilitation of visas for overseas travellers.

The 40 countries which would be included in the list for VoA include the USA, UK, Russia, Germany, France, China, Canada, Brazil, UAE, Italy, Sweden, Holland, Austria, Denmark, Poland, Belgium and Ireland, among others. However, these recommendations would take some time to see the light of the day. For implementation, the Home Affairs Ministry has to amend the visa manual, which would require brainstorming at different levels. The Planning Commission's recommendation is expected to speed up the processes required to ease the existing restrictions.

Speaking about the move, Peter Kerkar, Director, Cox & Kings said, “The government's move is timely and will help inbound tourism in a big way. The other significant move to increase the number of airports that will be allowed to issue Visa on Arrival is welcome as secondary  airports such as Goa, Gaya and Chandigarh receive international flights and  tourists who want to avail Visa on Arrival can fly directly to these secondary points, without the additional burden of landing in metro airports and then travelling to these destinations.

I believe that extending the Visa on Arrival facility to tourists from UK, USA, France and Germany, which is our traditional source markets and contribute close to 40 per cent of our inbound arrivals will have a very positive impact both from a point of earning more foreign exchange but also help in the development of our inbound tourism whose share is less than one per cent of the total worldwide arrivals.”

Pushkar in Rajasthan is usually crowded with visitors during its Pushkar Fair and every November, it gets even more crowded, with thousands of people- cattle traders, shopkeepers, merchants, dancers, musicians and artisans among them- congregating at Pushkar for a five-day long event which holds the distinction of being India's largest cattle fair. The fair is a memorable one with cocktail of sights, smells and sounds. For the space of five days, Pushkar's narrow lanes are the scene for hectic trade and barter, for merrymaking and rejoicing- and despite the fact that the increasing commercialisation of the Mela has made it a whole lot more touristy than before, it continues to be a delightful experience. This is by far and away the best time to visit Pushkar, and what with the fair draws a huge number of visitors from across the globe.
